Countries | Netherlands (Holland)
A tour of Holland had been arranged for Melba, but in 1899 the Boer War was being fought in South Africa and relations between Holland and Great Britain were strained and bitter.
However, it was decided that the tour should go on as planned. Melba’s first appearances were marked by poor houses and hostile audiences. But the voice conquered politics; Rotterdam and Amsterdam accorded Melba her usual applause. The tour continued into Germany. (1)
