In November 1899 Melba toured Holland and Germany.

At Melba’s first concert at the Philharmonic Hall, Berlin she had the honour to be accompanied by her old friend, violinist Joseph Joachim, who had given her advice years before when she was trying to organize her own concerts. He accompanied her for Mozart’s Il Re Pastore.
The programme included Handel’s Sweet Bird”, L’amero, Debiles Les Filler de Cadix and Verdi’s Ah, fors e lui. Melba’s first of three encores, to her own accompaniment, was a German song Bohm’s Still wie die Nacht.

In the first week in December, in Berlin Melba sang in a performance of Lucia di Lammermoor which was attended by the German Royal family who summoned Melba to the imperial box.

The Emperor told Melba he had never known “such enthusiasm in the Imperial Opera-House before.” Melba was to sing four times during her visit but the appearances extended to nine owing to the demands of the public. (1)

Returning from Austria in January 1900, Melba gave a further concert and opera performance in Leipzig and sang at the Gewandhaus orchestral concert with Arthur Nikisch as conductor. (2)

Melba’s final visit to Germany was in the summer of 1930 when she arranged a visit to Germany and Austria, to listen to the wonderful music of those countries. (3)
