The War Effort

When war broke out in Europe, Melba was in Australia visiting her father. Unable to return and realising her beloved Belgians and then the French and British needed support, she launched herself into organising a range of concerts and fund raising efforts.

The concerts started in Victoria and continued throughout Australia, America and Canada. After the war when she returned to Europe, Melba continued to support and raise money for organisations such as the Red Cross to help the many thousands of wounded soldiers.

Her Melba Gift Book was produced in June 1915 to raise money for the Belgian soldiers.

No one knows just how much money Melba raised but in recognition of her fund-raising work Melba received her DBE and later the GBE.

These pages will cover her fund raising events.
