John Watt Mitchell

John Watt was born about 1848 in Forfar, Angus, Scotland and died at Richmond on March 5, 1917. In 1882 he married Josephine Strachan Greig who was born in 1857 in London, England.

John came to Melbourne in 1865 aged 19 years. He departed from Liverpool and arrived at Melbourne in September on board the Great Britain. This was just a year after his older brother Andrew had died. [1]

Interestingly he gave his nationality as Irish.

John who was listed as a manager, died at his residence 87 Burnley Street, Richmond on March 6, 1917 and is interred in the Booroondara or Kew Cemetery, Melbourne.

Josephine died on August 27, 1918 and is buried with John at the Kew Cemetery. They lived at Daracome, 87 Burnley Street, Richmond. [2]

After John’s death, Josephine moved to Terang to live with her daughter Zoe and son-in-law Donald Macdonald a stock and station agent.

Children of John and Josephine:

  1. Beatrice (Zoe) born in 1883.
  2. Cyril Vivian (Cliff) born in 1886.
  3. Myrtle Nellie Josephine born about 1890 and died on April 25, 1928. She is buried at Kew Cemetery. [3]
